From abundant wildlife to spectacular sunsets, the City of Coral Springs is proud to have the expansive and majestic Florida Everglades as our immediate neighbor to the west. To create a vital connection between the Everglades, Coral Springs residents, and visitors, the Everglades Pedestrian Bike Loop Shared-Use Path (SUP), also known as the Everglades Loop project, has been approved by the City Commission as one of the City's Business Plan Initiatives.

The scenic overlook located along the southwestern edge of Sportsplex Drive would contain viewing platforms, an eatery, and a supply shop for cyclists. The 10.2-mile shared-use path that will enhance the pedestrian-bike connectivity to the adjacent land uses comprised of residential, recreational facilities, parks, and educational institutions.

There are 9 segments of the Everglades Loop:

Segments 1-7 - Existing Sidewalks

  • Segments 1-7 is 8.9 miles of existing sidewalk adjacent to existing roadways.
  • The intent is to widen the existing sidewalks to create a minimum 8-foot to 10-foot shared use path to accommodate pedestrians and bicycles.

Segment 8 - Floating Dock Connectivity

Location: Sunshine Water Control Canal from West Sample Road to Wiles Road.

  • Segment 8 will provide continuous pedestrian-bike connectivity with the installment of a 10' floating dock over the Sunshine Water Control Districts canal.
  • This segment is 1.04 miles long within the Sunshine Water Control District.

Segment 9 - Pedestrian Bicycle Bridge

Location: Wiles Road over the Sawgrass Expressway to connect Segment 1.

  • Segment 9 will be a new segment that will include a pedestrian-bicycle bridge that will accommodate a 12-foot wide shared-use path across the Sawgrass Expressway.
  • The bridge would complete the 10.2-mile pedestrian-bike lopp and make it an attractive option fore recreational users and promote a healthy lifestyle.

Phases

Phase I: Identify route via markers/signs/etc., construct sidewalks in areas where lacking to complete the loop, incorporate landscaping, benches, water fountains, etc. where possible.

  • The city is coordinating with local and state agencies to discuss the location of the bridge, the pathway, and the overlook to ensure design and timing for construction meet all requirements.
  • The city worked with a professional firm to develop a Basis of Design report. The detailed, 37-page report shows ideas, proposed dimensions, examples, elements from similar projects, and more. Note: The development of the report was paid for using $133,000 in ARPA funds.
  • The city is in the process of applying for grant funding to support the project. Notably, the city has applied for a significant grant through The Florida Shared-Use Non-motorized (SUN) Trail Program that would assist in the construction of the pedestrian bridge.

Phase II: Widening of sidewalks where possible to create an 8’ wide SUP (minimum if 10’ wide path is infeasible). 10’ wide SUP (desirable) path throughout the 10.2-mile Everglades loop to enhance the experience.

Phase III: Construct facilities such as pavilion(s), bike station(s), etc. along the route to provide additional amenities for users.
