Coral Springs, FL – The Coral Springs MLK Committee unanimously voted to posthumously award the 2021 MLK Monument Award to Dr. John W. Ruffin, Jr., for his valuable service and contribution to the Coral Springs community. After a long battle with cancer, Dr. Ruffin passed away on July 24, 2020.
 
Of the award winner, Vice Mayor Josh Simmons said, “Dr. John W. Ruffin Jr. was a person that walked the walk and talked the talk. He was one of our greatest community leaders not just in Coral Springs but in all of South Florida. As a man of principles and integrity, his leadership changed the lives of many in Coral Springs and to honor him with the MLK Monument Award demonstrates how much we valued and continue to value him for his service to us all.”
 
Dr. John W. Ruffin Jr. was a change agent and champion Coral Springs community leader who served as the former chairman of the Coral Springs Economic Development Foundation promoting community and economic development for the city of Coral Springs. Additionally, he also served as chairman on the Coral Springs Community Redevelopment Agency focusing on creating a vibrant and sustainable downtown for residents, businesses and visitors. His previous leadership has aggressively moved both of these organizations forward.
 
The MLK Monument Award honors local individuals or organizations who embody the ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Dr. John Ruffin Jr. was a dedicated visionary to the Coral Springs community who gave his time, talent and treasure in harmony with the ideals of Dr. King. As a mentor to many young men in the community, Dr. John Ruffin Jr. served as chairman of the United Negro College Fund in Broward County raising more than $2 million in scholarships during his time there, which benefited many high school students in the city and Broward County to pursue higher education.
