Coastal Waste & Recycling is responsible for the collection of solid waste, recyclables, yard waste, and bulk trash for the City of Coral Springs, effective October 1, 2024. For important information about pick up schedule(s), cart distribution and FAQs please view tabs below.

1. Why did the city bid for a new solid waste provider?

The city was required to seek proposals for a new contract for solid waste collection due to the completion of the existing contract with Waste Pro, including all extensions. Waste Pro was one of the five companies that bid on the contract.

2. What was the process for selecting a new provider?

To select a solid waste provider the City of Coral Springs issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) in May 2023. An Evaluation Committee made up of city management, public works, sustainability, and budget staff attended presentations for each company. Coastal was the unanimous top-ranked proposer. No payments or “kickbacks” are ever exchanged as part of a city RFP process as that is illegal and unethical. The Coral Springs Commission is not involved in the selection process for city contracts, which are put out to bid.

3. Why was Coastal Waste selected?

Coastal Waste and Recycling of Florida, Inc. was the unanimous top ranked proposer due to their history of success providing similar solid waste collection services for other municipalities, their significant recent experience in the Broward County market, the added benefits offered, and because their proposal represents the lowest cost of services when considering all three areas of service provision. 4. What is the financial impact on residents and businesses for the new contract?

The overall cost of trash and recycling is determined by multiple factors including hauling, tonnage, and disposal. The dollar amount for solid waste collection for FY2025 will be determined through the budget process, which is currently underway. 

5. When will Coastal begin trash and recycling pickup?

Coastal will begin servicing trash and recycling in the City of Coral Springs effective October 1, 2024.

6. Will there be a disruption of service?

We do not anticipate any disruption of service due to the change in providers. Starting this year, the hauler will not provide service on Thanksgiving Day (3rd Thursday in November) and Christmas Day (December 25).

7. Will I still place my trash out on the same day and time?

Some residents may experience a change in the day and time of trash and recycling pickup; however, for most residents, all aspects of trash pickup will remain the same. Any changes in the day and time will be posted online at least one month in advance, so the affected residents can be prepared for the change. Trash and recycling carts need to be placed by 7 a.m. on collection day and removed from the curb by 7 p.m. following pick up. Residents are encouraged to visit CoralSprings.gov/Trash to view the current garbage map and schedule.

8. Will I receive new trash and recycling carts? If so, how? Will there be a cost?

New carts will be provided; however, residents will continue to use their current blue and green carts until the replacement process takes place. Additional information will be available by the vendor providing instructions for cart exchange. New carts will be offered free of charge and will be available in three size options, 32-gallon, 64-gallon, and 96-gallon.

9. Do the changes impact the city’s Waste Transfer Station?

The availability of the Waste Transfer Station will remain the same. On the first Saturday and Sunday of every month, the following are accepted: paint, fluorescent light bulbs, Electronic Equipment, lithium, alkaline (except for vehicle batteries), and rechargeable batteries.

10. Do the changes in provider impact the city’s household composting program?

Some residents may experience a change in the day and time of trash and recycling pickup. Please review the map below for new days and routes effective October 1, 2024. Trash and recycling carts need to be placed by 7 a.m. on collection day and removed from the curb by 7 p.m. following pick up.

Coastal Map of Routes

Coastal will deliver one blue 65-gallon recycling cart and one green 95-gallon trash cart to every home with cart service within the city limits starting on October 15, 2024 free of charge. The carts will be delivered in two phases. Each phase is expected to take up to four weeks to complete, so please be patient if your neighbor receives their new cart and you have not yet received yours.

  • Blue recycle cart distribution will begin on October 15.
  • Green garbage cart distribution will begin on November 12.

What do I do with my old carts?

Continue to use your old carts until the new ones arrive. Please start using your new carts as soon as you receive them. Leave your old carts out at the curb (empty of material) until retrieved. Old cart pickup will begin immediately after new carts are received, but may take up to three days in some instances. 

Can I change the size of my cart? Is there a charge?

Residents may request a different size recycling or trash cart. One request per cart may be submitted free of charge; however, subsequent requests may result in additional costs. Keep in mind that special cart requests may not be accommodated until after the initial citywide cart exchange process is complete, anticipated to be on or after December 2024. 

Who do I contact if my new bin is damaged or my cart becomes damaged?

Please contact Coastal Waste & Recycling at 954-866-4738 or submit a ticket to the Coastal Portal to report either a new cart that is damaged or a cart that becomes damaged. 

What if I previously purchased an additional cart from WastePro? Will I be charged again?

Residents who purchased an additional cart from WastePro may request an additional replacement cart free of charge. Keep in mind that special cart requests may not be accommodated until after the initial citywide cart exchange process is complete, anticipated to be on or after December 2024.

Can I purchase a second cart?

Residents may purchase a second cart, if desired, by contacting Coastal Waste & Recycling at 954-866-4738 or submitting a ticket to the Coastal Portal. The fee for a new cart is $65. Keep in mind residents will be responsible for storing and adhering to city code for any cart that they own. Residents may incur an additional cost for replacement or repair if the cart becomes damaged.

What If my cart gets lost or stolen?

Residents whose carts become lost or stolen should file a written complaint with the Coral Springs Police Department, then provide a copy of the complaint when requesting a new cart from Coastal. Failure to provide a copy of a written complaint when requesting a new cart may result replacement costs and/or delivery charges that would be the responsibility of the resident.

Will there be a disruption of service?

We do not anticipate any disruption of service due to the change in providers.

Are holidays affected?

Starting this year, the hauler will not provide service on Thanksgiving Day (4th Thursday in November) and Christmas Day (December 25). 

Does this impact the city’s Waste Transfer Station?

The Waste Transfer Station has expanded its availability to allow for Residential Recycling Drop Off every Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. The Station will also remain open on the first Saturday (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Sunday (12 to 5 p.m.) of every month where the following items will be accepted: paint, fluorescent light bulbs, and electronic equipment. Composting will be available Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 12 to 4 p.m. 

Please note that the Waste Transfer Station is intended for non-commercial use, and ID is required to show proof of Coral Springs residency.

Do the changes in provider impact the city’s household composting program?

Will bulk waste pickup stay the same?

Coastal will pickup up to 6 cubic yards of bulk waste once per week (Six cubic yards is approximately equivalent to the size of 6 kitchen stoves or 3 refrigerators.) Only 2 cubic yards of the 6 may be construction debris. If residents exceed 6 cubic yards, the pile will not be hauled away, and Coastal will notify the resident by tagging the pile of debris with haul away instructions. Homeowners: It is important to notify landscapers, tree trimmers, contractors, etc. that they need to haul away their own debris following a job completed at your home if it exceeds the size limits.

Who receives bulk services?

  • Bulk pickup is provided once per week for single family homes only. Residents in multi-family residence should refer to their HOA for schedule and restrictions.

What are the basic bulk guidelines?

  • Do not place under trees or power lines where mechanical truck removal would be restricted.
  • Materials must be generated by the resident at the residential unit where the bulk is collected.
  • Should not exceed 6 cubic yards, which is approximately equivalent to the size of 6 kitchen stoves or 3 refrigerators.
  • Only 2 cubic yards of the 6 may be construction debris.
  • If residents exceed 6 cubic yards, the pile will not be hauled away, and Coastal will notify the resident by tagging the pile of debris with haul away instructions.
  • Homeowners: It is important to notify landscapers, tree trimmers, contractors, etc. that they need to haul away their own debris following a job completed at your home if it exceeds the size limits.
  • DO NOT place extra garbage bags with bulk; it will not be picked up.
  • Small lawn clippings must be bagged.
