Kevin McCarthy
Kevin McCarthy, tennis director for the city of Coral Springs, Fla., has been a certified member of the USPTA since 1978. Kevin has served on the Florida Division board of officers since 1988 and took over the role of president for a two-year term in 1998. He also serves on the USPTA National Education Committee, representing municipal facilities.
A highly ranked junior player from New Jersey, McCarthy attended the University of South Carolina on a tennis scholarship, graduating in1973 with a bachelor’s degree in history. He was ranked No. 1 in singles and doubles for four years and was team captain for two years.
After graduating, McCarthy became the head tennis professional at the Riomar Bay Yacht Club in Vero Beach, Fla. While he was there, he implemented a comprehensive tennis program for 11 years while becoming active as a USPTA member. He also developed and directed the Citrus Bowl Tennis Tournament, a $50,000 prize-money tournament for men and women.
In 1984, Kevin moved to Pompano Beach, Fla., where he took over as tennis director for the city of Pompano Beach. He helped develop a strong junior program over five years and hosted the Continental Cup, the international team tournament for girls. During this time, he also became a district president for the Florida Division of the USPTA.
Kevin took the position as tennis director for the city of Coral Springs, Fla., in 1989. The Cypress Park Tennis Center went from 89 members to 300 during his first two years, as well as having over 200 adults and juniors per week in his group lesson program. The city then built the Tennis Center of Coral Springs in 1993, a 16, red-clay hydrocourt facility that hosted America’s Red Clay Championships, an ATP tour event.
Since he has been in Coral Springs, Kevin has been very involved with the USTA, conducting USA 1-2-3 programs, including free lessons, Junior Team Tennis, Ralleyball, and adult leagues. He is also an Honorary Life Member of the USTA.
