Quarterly Message from Chief McKeone

Chief Brad McKeone

At the end of my last Chief’s message, I ended with comments about the fifth anniversary of the MSD tragedy.  Unfortunately, I must start this message by expressing my condolences to those affected by the tragic school shooting in Nashville, TN. My thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of all the victims, those impacted by the shooting, as well as all the first responders and emergency personnel involved. I commend the officers who so bravely and courageously ran toward the threat and stopped the shooter – there is no doubt their actions saved lives.

April 9 through April 15 is National Telecommunicators Week. This is a time for us to recognize the men and women who are the first to answer your emergency call. Their role is vital to public safety.  The compassion and dedication I see them demonstrate regularly is truly exceptional. To all those who serve in communications centers, but especially to those who make up the Coral Springs/Parkland/Coconut Creek Communications Center – thank you for your service!

May 4 through May 8 the City of Coral Springs, in coordination with the Veterans Coalition, will be bringing the The Moving Wall – a tribute to veterans, fallen service members, and missing service members from the Vietnam War. This is a way for us to show appreciation for those who served our country, honor those who gave their lives for our country, and for younger generations to learn about service and sacrifice.

May 14 through May 20 is designated as National Police Week. Thousands of law enforcement officers will travel to Washington, D.C. at this time to pay tribute and honor officers who have given their lives protecting communities throughout the United States of America. The 35th Annual Candlelight Vigil will take place on May 13, 2023, at 8:00 P.M. in which the names of the fallen officers will be read.  The candlelight vigil is also available virtually.

Recently, I have received many questions and had many conversations about SB150/HB543 (Constitutional Carry) which was signed into law by Governor DeSantis – effective July 1, 2023. I would encourage anyone who is looking to carry a concealed firearm under this law once it takes effect to fully review and understand what is still required by law. From a law enforcement perspective, one key point I want to highlight is that if you choose to carry a concealed firearm, you also must still carry identification and produce that identification upon request from a law enforcement officer.

Throughout the next few months, we have several community events here in the City of Coral Springs.  Please see the following list. We hope to see you there.

Bradley McKeone
