Coral Springs, FL –  On Tuesday, November 3, 2020, Nancy Metayer was elected to the Coral Springs Commission making history as the first Black and Haitian American woman to serve on the City Commission.
 
Of the election, Commissioner Joshua Simmons said, “Commissioner-Elect Nancy Metayer, who is a friend and someone I admire, joins me in making history in Coral Springs, she is the first Black and Haitian American woman elected to represent our community. I am beyond proud to witness this historical moment and I look forward to working with Commissioner-Elect Metayer, as we shape our city’s future.”
 
With 58,000 residents voting in the race for Seat 3, a six-person race, Metayer won with 32% of the votes. Commissioner-elect Metayer replaces Commissioner Larry Vignola who could not seek re-election due to term-limits after 10 years of service to Coral Springs.
 
Vice Mayor Joy Carter, who was re-elected to serve on the City Commission for Seat 5, said, “Commissioner-Elect Metayer joins me as a second woman sitting at the dais to help direct our city’s strategic priorities. The last time two women served our city together was in 1993. I am thrilled to have her serve in a leadership position.”
 
Metayer earned her Bachelor of Science from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and her master’s from Johns Hopkins University, Bloomberg School of Public Health. Currently, she serves on the Broward County Commission on the Status of Women, City of Coral Springs Neighborhood Environmental Committee and Community Involved Government Committee. Nancy Metayer is an Environmental Scientist and former member of the Broward County Soil and Water Conservation District with a decade of public service experience, leading on issues ranging from environmental advocacy to disaster relief. As commissioner and resident of Coral Springs for over 20 years, Metayer is ready to address concerns on economic growth, public safety and environmental sustainability.
 
On November 19, 2020, the City of Coral Springs will host a ceremony in the Commission Chambers to formally swear in Commissioner-Elect Metayer. Due to COVID-19, Commissioner-Elect Metayer’s swearing-in, as well as the ceremony for Vice Mayor Joy Carter and Mayor Scott Brook, is by invitation only. However, it will air live on CityTV, Blue Stream Channels 25, 25.2, 725 and on AT&T U-Verse channel 99. The swearing-in will also be live streamed on our website. 
 
The City of Coral Springs is grateful for all the candidates who ran for office with the desire to serve our community and residents to ensure we are the premier city to live, work and raise a family. The city congratulates Mayor Scott Brook, who ran unopposed, Vice Mayor Joy Carter and Commissioner-elect Nancy Metayer on their successful victories.
