Captain Nicholas Mazzei, Special Operations

Captain Nicholas Mazzei currently directs the Special Operations Component of the police department. In addition, he serves as the SWAT Commander and oversees the training and readiness of a multifaceted SWAT team consisting of 48 people including SWAT operators, SWAT medics, negotiators, and command vehicle technicians.

Captain Mazzei has been a Coral Springs resident since 1985 and joined the Coral Springs Police Department in 2001 where he has since held numerous leadership roles.

Upon becoming a police officer, Captain Mazzei worked as a road patrol officer for four years. In 2005 he became a detective in the Vice, Intelligence and Narcotics Unit. In 2009, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. During his tenure as a sergeant, Captain Mazzei supervised road patrol, the Bicycle Unit, the Substation Unit (now Street Intelligence Unit), and the Strategic Enforcement Team. In 2018, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant where he supervised a road patrol platoon until 2020. In January 2020, he transitioned to an operational support lieutenant where he oversaw multiple projects and assisted with the development of the Real Time Crime Center.

During his career, Captain Mazzei has been awarded three Exceptional Police Initiative Commendations, four Team Citations, supervised the Unit of the Year in 2012 and 2020, and was named Officer of the Year for 2007. During the same year (2007), Captain Mazzei was also recognized as the Broward County Officer of the Year. In addition, Captain Mazzei has also been a member of the Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) since 2002. He has held a leadership position on the team since 2005.

Captain Mazzei holds an undergraduate degree from Florida Atlantic University and a Master’s degree from Nova Southeastern University.
